I pulled one of the chips off the cards I got on eBay last week and figured I would have some fun with them. They are Yamaha YM2149 software sound generators. These are the nifty chips in things like Commodore 64, ZX spectrum and arcade machines that give that lovely tangy chiptune sound.
I had some problems with the chip at first as it refused to actually latch data but when I finally got it working it worked very well! I have source code available for download below for anyone who is interested or can even find one of these chips. I have not got envelope freq and shape working as the registers take my values but the waveform doesn't do a bloody thing.
